Mopeds and Marrakech

When visiting Marrakech with my dearest,Sana, we enjoyed the Medina very much, but we did not enjoy the Mopeds! The Moped situation in the tiny alleys near the souks and Kasbah's of Marrakech is out of control. We would be engaged in a nice conversation or stop to look at something and then "Zooooom" right past us almost clipping our arm or leg.  Most of the time "Magical" time spent in the medina is dodging the bikes and hoping you do not get hit. Even when you walk near the side walls, you still can not avoid them completely.  We both constantly commented on the danger of all these bikes and pedestrians coinciding in one area. How can this possibly be legal?

After reading an article from the Morocco News Board, it brought this issue back to my attention.  In his article he mentions that cops stop the bike riders, but they are easily bribed with a measily 20DH. What happens? You have 5 to 10 people stopped in one hour and 100DH in the officers pocket and Zero less pedestrians off the road.  Nice job Marrakech-really just ban the bikes from the Medina.
People like to say Marrakech is the "Las Vegas" of Morocco. Well I have some news for you-you will never see a bike riding on the pedestrian stip of Las Vegas- they will get a fine so big they need to win big money from the slots to pay it off.

Marrakech please get the bikes out of the Medina and onto the crowded streets!
