El Jadida (الجديدة in Arabic) is a coastal town in Morocco , at 96 km from Casablanca . It is the capital of the province of El Jadida . El Jadida (or al-Jadida) is the current name of the old Mazagão (Mazagan), fortified city built by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century, which was taken up by Moroccans than 1769 . The Portuguese fortifications of the city, with its bastions and ramparts is an early example of military architecture Portuguese the Renaissance . The surviving Portuguese buildings are the Portuguese cistern, the Portuguese fortress of Mazagan and the Church of the Assumption , built in the Manueline style . They offer an exceptional testimony of influences between European and Moroccan cultures. From the early nineteenth century, the city broke off the ramparts of the Portuguese city. It now extends far beyond what is merely a historical island on the Atlantic coast.
